Youth Memorial Award Collection of Circulating Art The collection grew out of the Tom Orr Youth Purchase Award. Orr had been as aspiring artist until his death in 1974 by an electrical accident before he reached his sixteenth birthday. Tom Orr had been a "regular" at spring and fall art shows sponsored by Columbus Arts Guild (Columbus Art League). He entered the predominantly adult show first at age twelve, and he exhibited in eight of these semi-annual events as well as in other shows and galleries. Contributions to the memory of Tom Orr became a fund to reward and encourage subsequent young exhibitors at the major community art fair through the Youth Purchase Award. Main Library Building and its Architects The main library building, also known as the Cleo Rogers Memorial Library, was designed by the firm of I. M. Pei and Partners, New York (NY). Construction began in November 1966, and the building was completed in October 1969. The dedication ceremony was held on May 16, 1971 to commemorate both the library building and the installation of the Large Arch sculpture created by Henry Moore. An addition to the north end of the main floor was begun in August 1986 and completed in June 1987. The architect for this addition was James K. Paris, Columbus (IN). |
