Our Heroes' Tree

Monday, November 8
5:00 to 8:00 pm
Main Library

Bartholomew County Public Library is partnering with the Military Family Research Institute (MFRI) at Purdue University to present Our Heroes' Tree. Through this program MFRI and the library are working to honor past and present service members and create an awareness of military families currently affected by deployment.

Our Heroes' Tree is a national program founded to recognize and honor the sacrifices of current service members, veterans and deceased service members.

To participate in Our Heroes' Tree, create a handmade ornament honoring a service member from past and present wars, conflicts or peacetime operations.

Main Library: Bring the ornament to the library by November 9, 2009 to hang on the library's Our Heroes' Tree. Participants can also submit a personal story about the hero featured on the homemade ornament.

Hope Branch Library: Bring the ornament to the library beginning November 16, 2009 to hang on the library's Our Heroes' Tree. Participants can also submit a personal story about the hero featured on the homemade ornament.

Main Library: Also on November 9 between 5:00 and 8:00 pm individuals may make ornaments at the library to hang on the tree. Supplies will be provided. Those who wish to make an ornament are encouraged to include a picture of a service member.

Later in November, two of the ornaments from our Heroes' Tree will be part of the Indiana State Heroes' Tree that will be unveiled at the Indiana State Library. The Indiana State Virtual Heroes' Tree will launch for viewing on the web at www.cfs.purdue.edu/mfri/oht.

BONUS: On November 9 at 6:30 pm John Walter will talk about his WWII experiences from his training as a pilot for the US Air Force to flying 35 combat missions over Europe as a B-17 Flying Fortress pilot.
